7 Reasons Why Elk is Joe Rogan’s Favorite Meat

7 Reasons Why Joe Rogan Likes Elk

If you listen to the JRE podcast regularly you have heard Joe Rogan talk about elk being his favorite meat. Elk is the staple of Rogan’s diet, his go-to meat for serving dinner. He often prepares it with delicious sides like jalapenos, kimchi, broccoli, and kale.

But why does he like elk so much?

Joe Rogan enjoys elk meat for its delightful taste, impressive nutritional content, and organic nature. He personally hunts the elk, supplying his family with over 200 pounds of elk meat to sustain them throughout the year. This allows him to have confidence in the source of his food.

Rogan enjoys the satisfaction that goes with hunting elk – the challenge of trekking up mountains, scoring the kill, and then hauling the meat back down, as well as doing all this with some of his closest friends.

Reason #7: To Give Elk to His Friends and Podcast Guests

A common occurrence on the JRE podcast is to hear Rogan offer some elk meat to a podcast guest, saying something like: “I’ve got some here in the freezer.”

Most people have never tried elk and that’s why podcasts guests are often intrigued about Rogan’s elk admiration. Tom Papa is one of the people, with Rogan calling him the “#1 consumer of my elk meat.” Check it out:

Reason #6: Eat What You Kill

On his JRE podcast, Rogan has talked about being a responsible hunter and “honoring the animal.” To honor the animal, or elk, is to show gratitude by “eating what you kill.”

Rogan doesn’t understand why people hunt just for sport and trophies. For him, it is fun, but it’s all about hunting for food.

Rogan has talked about the hypocrisy of people who are against hunting, yet those same people buy meat at grocery stores and fast food restaurants. He realized that there is a huge disconnect about hunters and that most are very responsible.

Reason #5: For Camaraderie With Buddies

Rogan first got into hunting around 2012 with his buddy and fellow comedian Bryan Callen, and hunting guide Steven Rinella.

Rogan enjoys the hunting experience, being out in the wilderness, and stalking an animal using fitness and mobility. Because elk live in areas that are remote, cold, and mountainous, the experience is sure to be breathtaking.

Rogan has fallen in love with hunting so much that he has had fellow hunting experts, Steven Rinella, John Dudley, Cameron Hanes, and Doug Duren on his podcast. He even setup a virtual hunting simulator at his podcast studio in Los Angeles, prior to moving to Austin, TX.

Reason #4: “It’s Like Eating a Super-Animal”

Rogan said on his podcast that eating elk is like “eating a super-animal.” He is indicating, from his experience, that eating elk gives him a boost of energy, noting that it might increase his testosterone.

Elk are huge animals, and mature bulls can weigh about 700 pounds and have monstrous antlers that they shed every year.

Elk live a tough life. They run up and down mountains all day, in areas where wolves and grizzly bears are the main predators. Plus, male elk have to battle hard for the right to breed with the females. You can clearly see why they are, in fact, super-animals.

Reason #3: Provide Food For His Family

One great thing about elk is that one successful kill can provide a few hundred pounds of elk meat. How much meat does an elk yield? This article says that depending upon gender, elk usually yields between 169 – 219 of boneless elk meat.

Rogan has often referred to pulling some elk out of his freezer. Which is great because that can be stored and snacked on for an entire year. When you consider it, one elk hunt is quite an economically beneficial adventure.

Reason #2: Rogan Likes How Elk Tastes

Rogan has said that elk has a minimal game-like taste compared to other wild game like deer, moose, and boar. It has been reported that elk can even taste less gamey than organic hamburger meat. He says that elk is incredibly delicious, especially the way he prepares it.

On a Traeger pellet grill, using his “low and slow” and reverse sear method, he cooks elk on a low temperature for a few hours and then sears it on a hot frying pan.

Reason #1: Elk Is Wild, Organic, and Free-Range

Rogan said that one his favorite things about elk is that it is wild and organic, which is completely different than the typical meats you find at the grocery store.

  • Wild and cage-free (hunted himself)
  • Completely organic
  • Hormone free
  • Anti-biotic free
  • Steroid free
  • Lean and low in fat
