Joe Rogan is the most famous UFC commentator of all time and aside from that, he is also known for his podcast ”The Joe Rogan Experience” and being a hilarious stand-up comedian.
He invites guests onto his podcast and talks about various topics in regards to current events. A large portion of his shows focus on the topic of fighting, mostly covering boxing, karate, MMA, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and lethwei.
As we all know, Joe Rogan loves the fight scene which begs the question – is actually good at martial arts, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is a discipline that plays a big role in MMA?
Joe Rogan Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Background
Joe Rogan is an avid practitioner of various martial arts (taekwondo, karate, wrestling, BJJ, kickboxing) and his relationship with martial arts started off from a very young age. At the age of 13, Joe Rogan practiced both wrestling and karate by which he saw it as a way to build his confidence.

He then transitioned to taekwondo at the age of 15 and by the age of 19 he would win the US open championship in taekwondo in the lightweight division.
Aside from having a blackbelt in taekwondo he also has a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which he received in 2012 after being a brown belt for 8 years.
How good is Joe Rogan in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Well, Rogan has two blackbelts in Jiu-Jitsu and having a black belt actually means that you are an expert level BJJ practitioner in terms of technical and practical skills. The reason it takes so long to progress in belts is it takes a lot of time and contribution for one to progress into the next rank.
Plus, Rogan keeps an extremely busy schedule with coveted focus going to podcasting, comedy, and UFC commentating.
How does Rogan’s use his BJJ knowledge as a UFC commentator?
In my opinion, Joe Rogan is definitely the best fight commentator that is out there right now. With his knowledge, he is able to breakdown the different techniques used in a fight in a way that is accessible to viewers who are casual fight fans.
For example, when fighters are grappling on the ground he would explain the different chokes/locks used and the limbs that the fighter is trying to isolate.
Aside from that, his excitement whenever something crazy happens in a fight makes him a very entertaining commentator.
How Does A Person Get Good At BJJ?
1. Understand and Learn The Different Techniques
At the end of the day, as a BJJ practitioner it is not only about attacking all the time. It is also about defending against techniques that are going to be used against you.
In order to defend against a technique, you have to learn and understand them. So, it is very important to understand that BJJ is a process by which you need to keep improving and expanding your knowledge if you are looking to get good at it.
2. Dedication
Fundamentals play an important role in becoming good at BJJ. To have a strong fundamentals in BJJ one would need to dedicate themselves with years of practice in order to be great at it due to the fact that everyone has a different body proportion, weight, length, etc.
So, it is not only about knowing the different techniques but it is also about knowing your own body in order to execute the techniques efficiently with different body types. So, you need to keep on training and gaining experience through competitions, sparring, etc until it becomes something that is comfortable for you.
Joe Rogan Almost Fought Wesley Snipes
There were rumors circulating around the internet that Joe Rogan was going to potentially fight the ”Blade” star Wesley Snipes in a UFC match. Which was later confirmed by Joe Rogan to be true.
However, the match did not happen which is a little disappointing in my opinion as it could be really entertaining to watch and it definitely had the potential to be one of the biggest events in fight history.
The “as to why” the fight almost happened is because Wesley Snipes had trouble with the IRS which lead to his agent approach the UFC.
Originally the first potential candidate for the fight was Jean Claude Van Damme vs. Wesley Snipes, which would be a very entertaining fight too in my opinion.
But McLaren who is a UFC official at that time was not keen on the idea of Wesley Snipes vs Jean Claude Van Damme. Instead he had Joe Rogan in mind. Despite the fight not happening Joe Rogan believes that he would easily win the match by submission.
Joe Rogan is the more experienced and complete fighter in terms of disciplines. He has both striking and ground techniques, including BJJ. Plus history has shown that fighters with zero ground technique would easily lose a fight in 2 – 3 minutes.
