“I really respect the way you’re looking at things.” – Joe Rogan on how Miley Cyrus now views her life
JRE podcast episode #1531 – Miley Cyrus was an insightful one, digging deep into her past experiences as a child star, with Joe Rogan providing useful advice for her going forward.
Rogan didn’t have child fame himself, calling his rise to fame a “slow burn” that started in his 30’s and has steadily increased since then. But Cyrus, born in 1992, was thrust into child fame at the young age of 14 with her role as Hannah Montana.
A good portion of this episode was about Cyrus’s guilt that she feels sometimes for her past attitudes and actions, some involving drugs and alcohol. Now sober and clear-headed, she feels fortunate to have escaped and is turning her problems into her greatest strengths.
Voice Change: Deep and Heavy
At the beginning of the podcast Rogan comments about how Cyrus’s voice is very “heavy” and that it wasn’t always that way.
It turns out that in November 2019 Cyrus had vocal cord surgery because she was having problems with her voice, leading to it being so much deeper now. She notes that the cause was from years of over-stress, over-singing, over-talking, and smoking too much marijuana.
Interestingly, she said that your voice is like a face, it collects wrinkles and dirt over time. And also like a muscle in that it needs recovery days, which she didn’t get much of, beginning with her days playing Hannah Montana.
Smoking weed as Hannah Montana
Rogan was particularly intrigued by Cyrus’s unique experience of being a childhood superstar. Miley thinks that while yes she was thrust into fame and overworked, she learned life balance and many tough lessons from that.
One hilarious takeaway from the podcast is that Miley smoked a lot of weed and took mushrooms as a teenager playing Hannah Montana. She pondered, “How much weed can I actually smoke and still play a teenage superstar on the Disney channel?” The answer is more than you would think.
Now Sober
Cyrus told Rogan that she has now been sober from alcohol, weed, and drugs since her vocal surgery in November 2019. She doesn’t commit to staying that way for the rest of her life but is enjoying the change.
One thing that possibly saved her from real disaster is that she never liked downers like opioids and Quaaludes. She preferred to go UP on things like cocaine.
She admits that alcohol was not her problem, but with a family history of alcohol problems has decided to give that up too – for now. And she hates waking up with a hangover and “feeling like a volcano’s erupting in my brain.”
Cyrus acknowledges that she is fortunate she didn’t kick out all the people that truly cared about her, like so many other celebrities do. “Not many people in my position get to say that.”
Cyrus’s therapist changed her life
A significant fork in the road for Cyrus was a time she was walking through the airport and stumbled upon a book called Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Dr. Daniel Amen. She was suffering from anxiety and drugs, and barely made it on the plane thanks to the help of this book.
Now her doctor, Dr. Amen has helped Cyrus overcome the feeling of not liking the person she was living with inside her head (herself). He’s helped her drop weed, psychedelics, and gluten, and analyzed blood work and brain scans to improve her health.
Dr. Amen, whom Rogan had never heard of, founded Amen Clinics and is a self-help guru and specializes in treating behavior disorders, amongst many other things. He also performed SPECT scans on Cyrus’s brain to analyze if any damage had been done to her brain and to recommend treatment practices. Fortunately, her brain scans showed mostly positive signs.
Miley learned from Dr. Amen that for the lifestyle she lives, “I have to do almost everything else right.” And for the amount of stress she deals with on a daily basis, her brain, supplementation, diet, exercise and health have to be on point.
She now looks at herself like a high-performance athlete and exercises with Pilates. She eats salmon and fish eggs, and supplements with fish oil. From that, she has seen a huge improvement in her brain, inflammation issues and feels so much sharper now.
Her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus doesn’t have Wi-Fi
Cyrus told Rogan that her dad prefers to remain off the grid and doesn’t even have Wi-Fi at his house. In fact, he still has a BlackBerry. When Billy Ray wants to FaceTime, he drives to her uncles house to get on the internet.
Billy Ray absolutely loves pizza and for his birthday wanted to see if he could go 365 days without eating it. So, for his birthday Miley got him a 5-foot pizza hallmarked with a custom box with a drawing of her on it.
A scary tidbit from the podcast is that Miley had head trauma as a little kid do to a dirt bike accident with her dad. She was riding on the back and hit her head on tree branch.
Rogan said head trauma is a common thing in wild people, like Miley, while providing other examples of comedians he knows: Sam Kinison and Roseanna Barr.
Divorce with Liam Hemsworth
The topic of Miley’s tough, public divorce with Liam Hemsworth came up on this episode. She stated that the tough thing is not that two people fell out of love, it’s the public villainizing from the media and tabloids.
The media falsely portrayed it as a sudden falling out when actually it took time for the two superstars to fall out of love. It wasn’t instant and the news can’t see that but still portrayed it that way with fake news and made up stories.
One of her biggest frustrations is not being able to tell her story in real time.
Monkey Butt
Hilariously, Miley told Rogan about her pet bulldog named Kate Moss. The dog, a rescue, has a lot of issues due to a bloodline that was over-bred. Kate Moss needs specific care for her bottom.
Cyrus puts “monkey butt”, a baby powder, onto her dogs butt. The dog can’t see, can’t hear, and can barely walk. She even puts diapers on it.
“She’s so ugly that they waived the adoption fee,” said Cyrus. The dog before Cyrus adopted it:

Dolly Parton As A Mentor
Cyrus told Rogan that one of the things she is most grateful for is that she didn’t close doors with the people that truly cared about her, even amidst her wild partying days.
She is still close to her mom, dad, and even has some amazing mentors, including Dolly Parton and Stevie Nicks. In fact, Dolly is Cyrus’s godmother.
She is also fortunate to grow up around George Jones who was best friends with dad.
Now, Cyrus can include Joe Rogan as a friend and mentor. Rogan said that if he could prescribe her one thing it would be rigorous exercise. He even went so far as to describe her like a Ferrari that is geared to go all out, needing exercise to quiet her mind and relieve stress.
Cyrus is a huge RuPaul Drag Race
Rogan had never heard of RuPaul’s drag race or death drops, but Cyrus is a big fan, if not the biggest fan on the planet.
RuPaul is an American drag queen (male) that started drag race competitions similar to how American Idol and America’s Got Talent shows are run. Judges score the performances and Miley has even been a judge on the show.
The shows are famous for their “death drops”, doing full split air drops and being “painted for the gods.”
