Who is Truett Hanes? A Fitness Superstar in the Making

Ever heard of Cameron Hanes? The master bowhunter and elite athlete is one of Joe Rogan’s favorite guests (see episode #1730). Well, his son Truett Hanes is already making a name for himself by setting fitness world records, showing that the ‘wildside’ runs in the family.

Truett Hanes is the son of the renowned bowhunter Cameron Hanes, a MTN OPS sponsored athlete, an accomplished cross-country bowhunter, and a fitness-focused YouTuber. He attained the remarkable achievement of breaking David Goggins’ pull-up world record, accomplishing an astounding 4,100 pull-ups in just 17.5 hours. Later, on October 14th, 2023, he broke the record again – doing 8,100 pull-ups in 24 hours.

Unlike his dad, Truett has not yet been on the Joe Rogan Experience but Rogan has talked about him on the podcast. You can count on Truett appearing as a JRE guest in the not-so-distant future.

Truett Hanes Background and Lifestyle

Truett Hanes was born and raised in Oregon, just like the rest of the family, where he developed a love for being outdoors. From an early age, he went elk hunting with his father and brother (Tanner), learning the art of bowhunting and a passion for testing the limits of their physical capabilities.

At school, he was interested in American Football. Although, as he joked on Instagram, he was a “football prodigy,” only making the 4th grade team despite being a 6th grader. Nonetheless, it marked his journey into fitness – something that would become a lifelong passion.

If you follow Truett on Instagram or YouTube, you’ll discover his passion for fitness and see him routinely pushing the physical limits of what he’s capable of. Like other fitness and motivational influencers, like David Goggins or Jocko Willink, he is always trying to top his personal best. Almost every video features him attempting a mind-blowing challenge – be it 50 pull-ups, 100 pushups in under 5 minutes or running a marathon.

Of course, there are also some inspiring clips of Truett and his father out hunting elk. In one video, the pair head out into the Utah wilderness for a bowhunting expedition. Seeing the pair stalk and hunt the elk through the forests and hills is fascinating.

“Nothing beats hunting with your dad during the rut.”

Truett Hanes vs. David Goggins: Pull-up Contest

Perhaps Truett Hanes’s most recognizable accomplishment was his pull-up competition with David Goggins. As Goggins noted in the first video posted on Truett’s channel:

“I remember, the last time I saw you, we did a 50K run and then an animalistic workout in the gym. Do you remember that? I remember it so much because I saw you eyeballing me and even eyeballing your dad. You were looking for the title. You wanted that; you’re looking to be a savage.”

-David Goggins on Truett Hanes

In 2013, Goggins, the former Navy SEAL, ultramarathon runner, and living legend, set the Guinness World Record title for the most pull-ups in a 24-hour period: a monumental 4,030 pull-ups in 17 hours.

In 2020, Truett set out to break Goggins’s world record, waking up at 1:51 AM. After a protein shake and a quick breakfast, he headed to the gym, and started his pull-ups at 3am. His mindset was clear:

“I put a chip on my shoulder. Because I knew that if he [David Goggins] believed in me, there’s no good excuse not to fulfill my goal.”

By 8:15 PM, he’d beaten Goggins’s previous record, and just 20 minutes later, he’d set a new world record of 4,100 pull-ups in 17 hours and 35 minutes. Even Joe Rogan himself took note of Truett’s efforts by discussing it on the JRE Podcast.

Truett Hanes New Record: 8,100 Pull-ups in 24 Hours

Truett’s previous record for most pull-ups in 24 hours (the one he got over Goggins) had later been broken by a number of 8,008 pull-ups. Not willing to settle, Truett set out on a rigorous training regimen to make another attempt to reclaim his record.

On October 14th, 2023, Truett broke the world pull-up record for most in 24 hours, doing 8,100 pull-ups. This was his second time as the world record holder, and astonishingly, doing over double the amount of pull-ups as his previous record of 4,030.

Although the Instagram picture below shows 8,009 pull-ups, that was the moment he broke the previous record. He went on to do another 91:

Notably, Truett had been very doubtful earlier in the day, thinking about quitting, but credited his wife as giving him the extra motivation to push through on yet another remarkable achievement. This might be one record that could make David Goggins surrender for the first time.

Truett Hanes Diet

As for his breakfast, he enjoys standard bacon, eggs, and toast. Followed, of course, by his elk pills. Made from Australian grass-fed elk, they’re phenomenal for liver support. And finally, he also takes an allergy pill, vitamin B, and vitamin D (10,000 IU) supplements.

He eats 11 eggs every day, attempting to get 250 grams of protein daily. And just before bed, he takes his final supplement: MTN OPS Slumber (containing 1 mg of melatonin).

Truett Hanes Workouts

After breakfast, he does a pushup routine, including several variations:

  • 10 x Staggered pushups (Left)
  • 10 x Staggered pushups (Right)
  • 10 x Fly pushups
  • 10 x Close-together pushups
  • 10 x Diamond pushups

After finishing one round, Truett cycles back and completes it a second two time for a total of 100 pushups. Next, it’s time for 2,000 pull-ups, which he finishes in a little over 4 hours. It’s then time for a relaxation game of fetch with his dog – wearing a 10-pound plate vest (of course).

Please note that Truett’s workout routine is one of constant change, variety, and experimentation to push the limits of what he is capable of. And contrary to popular belief, Truett is completely financially independent. He works a full-time job and does 3 hours of workouts daily.

What are Truett Hanes Most Impressive Achievements?

Truett Hanes has some other awe-inspiring achievements and accomplishments under his belt. In an early 2022 video, he explained that he starts every workout by performing 100 pull-ups and 100 pushups (it takes around 10 minutes).

On one challenge, he executed 50 pull-ups and 100 pushups in just 5 minutes. In another video, he detailed his mental preparation for a 100-mile run. Before the challenge, he had zero training – except lifting seven days a week and walking his dog. While his dad wasn’t convinced he could finish, he completed it in 32 hours and 8 minutes (22 minutes before the cut-off).

Other impressive feats include:

  • 1,000 Pushups in 1 Hour
  • 1,000 Dips in 1 Hour
